I was pleased as punch when Hutch asked me to cover a day this week while she's off tending to her unicorn ranch (clearly I forgot what she's really doing). After I finished screaming and jumping up and down and calling all my friends and relatives to tell them the news, she wanted to know if I had a preferred day. What options did I have?
Well Thursday was open. And of course I was all over the chance to do the first Thankful Thursday in the magical month of May! *jazz hands*
Then I realized that I needed to pick one specific thing to be thankful for. That's tough because 9 days out of 10 my life is pretty terrific. I have a wonderful new husband who puts up with all my crap, 2 adorable fuzzy kitties (one of which I am convinced is out for world domination), a good job, a roof over my head, and beer in my fridge.
Maybe I should write about beer. No...I'll leave that for Hutch to do on another Thursday. Plus it will probably all be gone by the time I finish writing this
So then maybe I should write about:

You might be wondering why I'm so thankful for shelf paper. That's easy. Because this isn't shelf paper; it's a yoga mat. I love yoga and there is not a day that goes by that I'm not super thankful that I started practicing almost 2 years ago. Let me give you an example of the awesome:
I wasn't having the best day on Monday. Not for any reason in particular; I was just in one of those aggro moods that can only come with a Monday. All day long, I was looking forward to my favorite 6:15 pm hot vinyasa flow class because I knew that no matter how terrible things got and how many faces I wanted to rip off, going to yoga would make everything alright. That 90 minute class was a lot harder than usual because it was incredibly muggy in the room, but even though I left the studio looking like I had just gone for a swim with my clothes on, I felt like an entirely new person. All the headaches and annoyances from earlier were completely forgotten.
It's like magic.
Not only has it helped to keep me on the saner side of insane, but I've also accomplished so much as far as improving my strength and flexibility. When I first started, I could barely stand on one foot without falling on my face and now I can do postures like this and this. And I think that it's pretty much possible for anyone with enough practice.
One day I hope to get my teacher's certification so that I can share my love of yoga with others. It won't be this year, but maybe next if I'm lucky.
I'm not sure just when Hutch will be back to her regularly scheduled blogging (unicorns are VERY time consuming), but I would like to thank her for passing the reigns over to me today! Namaste!

The fact that you managed to work jazz hands into a post is, indeed, AWESOME.
Kelly
I had a yoga class in college (I had to take one more class to be full time -- it was my last semester) and it was amazing. HOwever. It was at the most inconvenient time...right around 5:30 pm when we were all sleepy and ready for that pre gaming nap. I fell asleep more than once. But if it makes you feel that good -- I definitely have to try it!
Don't laugh, but I have a Susan Powter workout DVD called Trailer Park Yoga. She does yoga in her motorhome and then she makes hummus.
OK, now you can laugh.
I do yoga on the wii sometimes...it's way relaxing! I hope you get to teach people too Salt, that would be rather awesome! and fun! ;)
Judging by those postures - you're very bendy.
Hey - last week I won 2 free yoga classes for me and a friend. Wanna go with me???
My unicorns gave me just enough time to come and say thanks!! I have no idea how you pull off those poses, I get excited when i can do the one where you're in a lunge all twisted up with one arm under your thigh and the other behind your back grabbing on to the other hand. I have no idea what it's called, but I no longer fall over! Yoga will be my go to cardio for the next couple weeks as I'm supposed to avoid strenuous activity, boo
Be careful...unicorns can be really strenuous too!
Getting yourself in a bind (which is what that is when you twist your arm under your thigh like that) is the first step in getting into bird of paradise (which is the second link). So you are already partially there. Next you have to stand up and kick out your leg while keeping your hands clasped!
CHER - I WISH I COULD GO WITH YOU! We would have somuchfun! Maybe if I start walking to Canada now.
And thanks ya'll and thanks to Hutch again for letting me take over the place today!
I do this one really easy AM yoga dvd sometimes which is mostly just stretching. It is the only thing that cures my back pain. I have yet to master a headstand though.
And I'm sold. Don't ever peer pressure to do something illegal. I might cave. HA!
Never tried yoga. I'm so unflexible, and I'd look like a complete unicorn's ass.
I'll leave it to bendy people.
I can handle shelf paper, though.
I love the shelf paper thing, that's so cool ... I don't have the strength, flexibility or mindset for yoga. Kudos for you for being all of that and then some (tall dark and handsome... sorry an old song lyric just took over my brain)... But seriously cool post and nice seeing you guest blogging. If I'm not already following Hutch, I will be today!
I need to start Yoga back up. And I just pee'd myself when I saw that you did jazz hands. YES! It's catching on!
Hm. I just do not think I am bendy enough for yoga. Not at all!
How do you pronounce vinyasa?
I don't know how.
Is that bad?
I am so with you. Not necessarily with yoga but with working out in general. It really dictates my mood. When I feel a funk, I can guarantee I haven't done anything aerobic in a few days.
Gotta love those endorphins.
GAH, that makes me want to get back into yoga again. I felt so 'at peace' when I'd leave any class.
My daughter swears it keeps her sane and she falls asleep really easily after. Once she fell asleep in the corpse pose!
i want to try hot yoga. i feel accomplished when i sweat. which is not often enough.
Chicken - And would you believe that I had absolutely zero idea that you worked jazz hands into yours until after I had written mine?
I firmly believe the world would be a better place if there were more jazz hands.
blueviolet - I fell asleep in savasana once. It was only for 5 minutes and when I woke up I felt like I had been asleep for an hour! It was very weird!
Mimi - VIN - YA - SAH. :)
Thanks everybody!
Bird of Paradise is such a graceful pose. I haven’t been able to do it yet myself. Leeann Carey, an amazing teacher, has a great free yoga video on this pose. Thought your readers might want to check it out: http://www.planetyoga.com/yoga-blogs/free-yoga-video-birds-of-paradise-pose/
