Top 5 Throwdown - Cover Songs

Katie has challenged me to another throwdown.  The first can be found here.  This time I got to pick the topic. Easy...Cover Songs!  My criteria is the song must be better than, and still respectful of, the original. Example, Tim McGraw's cover of Tiny Dancer (original is my all time fave song ever) shows respect to Elton, but is by no means better.  I mean, it's Elton, so really?   So go check out Katie's LIST and let us know what you think!

Honorable Mentions:

Let's Get It On by Jack Black (from High Fidelity)
I couldn't leave out the cover from the best movie to pay tribute to Top 5 lists!

Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole
So close to making the Top 5, but I had to make cuts at some point.

MY TOP 5:

5. Glory of Love by New Found Glory
Many summers ago, Vladeraptor and I made a CD of cover songs. I listened to this one over and over.  Whenever I'd come back to visit I'd make her play it.

4. Come Together by Michael Jackson
If there's anyone who could top the Beatles, it's Michael.  Sorry Aerosmith

3. Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley
Even though it's getting overplayed on every TV show, this version holds steady at #3!

2. Come on Eileen by Save Ferris
I'm a huge fan of the original, but this version makes me mentally dance every time I hear it, and I'll often break out in actual dance.  I hope you all have a song that makes you mentally dance!

1. Long Black Veil by Dave Matthews Band f. Emmylou Harris
If there's a song that could rival my love for Tiny Dancer this version of Long Black Veil would be it.  I've played it so much my Listener Supported CD now skips.  To this day I still get chills!

Long Black Veil - good pick. :-) I forgot about that one. I almost went with a Dave and Tim cover of Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds", but that's not recorded anywhere.

And "Come On Eileen" is a GREAT choice!! That is almost better than the original.

Thanks again for playing! :-) Good topic choice, by the way. Narrowing down my list was really hard.

I love, love, love, all of New Found Glory's covers! Don't care much for their original music, but just can't get enough of their cover albums. Good list.

I love to hear how new generations redo older songs and make them their own... most are wonderful and just a few don't match the power of the original (in my mind) which could be because my experiences at the time were different and the song fit that time... thanks for the sharing... come visit when you can...

These are great! I hadn't heard the New Found Glory one, love it! I'm also a BIG fan of Over the Rainbow. Just something about that song that makes me smile. My favorite cover of all time is the Phish cover of Gin & Juice....they used to play it all the time at the bar we frequented in college and it was a fav of our crew, if for no other reason that it's ridiculousness.

I love Jeff Buckley, but I actually like the KD Lang cover of that song a little bit better. I just realized this last night when I added it to my dad's wedding playlist.

Now Save Ferris = TOPS. I love that cover!

My favorite covers of all time are Toots and the Maytals album Radio Dread where they cover all Radiohead songs. In reggae. Awesome.

Okay, I am LOVING your selections. We would sooooooooo be bffs if i knew you in real life. :)

DMB - LOVE. That Jeff Buckley song makes me get teary every time i hear it. Come on Eileen is my all-time #1 dance song... nothing gets me on the dance floor quicker (even though I haven't been to a dance club in forever) and it doesn't matter in the slightest what version it is.

And I love, love, love that you mentioned that gave a shout out to High Fidelity... it only has the most "top 5 lists" ever mentioned in a movie EVER. LOVE.

'High Fidelity' is one of my most fave movies and JB's version of 'Let's Get it On'....it's PERFECT!

Totally agree with Save Ferris.

I'll add No Doubt's, 'It's My Life', originally from Talk Talk

I also like Richard Cheese for a lounge version on 'Nookie'. It makes me happy.

I love High Fidelity. I used to be pretty much obsessed with all the songs that were in that movie. I also like Long Black Veil and that version of Over the Rainbow. And Hallelujah always reminds me of The OC.

Love the Beatles, but Siouxsie and the Banshees' cover of Dear Prudence knocks me out when I hear it.

Well, you know I have HUGE love for Iz because that's the song I walked down the aisle to at our wedding. It holds a special place in my heart. ;) I can't try out each of these properly because Neal is going to sleep right now...but I did add them to my "Songs to Check Out" on my iPod for tomorrow morning. I LOVE DMB and I heart cover songs, as long as they are well-done...which y'know is hard to find. So, thank you for rising to the challenge and sharing! I can't wait to check out your suggestions! ;)
