Today, I'm focusing on Waxing Philosophical with prompt #13
What 1 aspect of blogging and social media is your favorite? (leaving the least favorite part out...I do what I want)
The 1 aspect I love more than anything else is absolutely, hands-down, the community and friends I've made.
Back in the day, when I first started recognizing the Awesome through blogging, I differentiated between blog friends and those I saw daily with the term "IRL." Now that line is non-existent. When I'm having an off day, or just need a good laugh, I find comfort in twitter, gchat, comments, email and text convos. You all have become my personal Funk Masters. Of course, you're also there for the good times, or to laugh at/with me when I do something ridiculous (no shortage there).
The friendships go beyond the computer and phone though. In the last year I met Surferwife (the cherry popper), AuntBT and Jennifer, and got together with some Hometown bloggers Heather, Katie, April and Hayes. In two weeks, AuntBT will be hitting up Sacramento for CalTexAwesomefest2011. She's even going to be my +1 for a wedding in Tahoe! A month later, Fojoy and her Hubs will be here too. Come October, I'll hopefully be on a plane headed to Kentucky for a crazy weekend with Ally and Shana! Makers Mark distillery anyone? Meeting these amazing ladies will definitely be among the highlights of my year! Without blogging, I never would have known who they were, let alone be playing tour guide in Sac (who visits here by choice, really?).
We all struggle with how to explain "blog friends" to people who don't blog (or only blog to provide family/friends with updates). I met her through the internets? She leaves the most hilarious comments? She totally understands what it means to be on The Hook? He throws out That's What She Said's even more than I do? She cringes at the use of "Puddy Tat" too?
Sounds kind of crazy to an outsider I'm sure. For me, it's a friendship just like any other.

Sometimes y'all are better then irl friends. #justsayin
I totally agree with the friendships. I don't know how I could have coped with the first few months of motherhood with advice and silliness to make me smile. It's hard for people to understand when they don't blog!
I agree with Amanda...sometimes you are better than IRL friends. Although, I don't really even make that distinction anymore. My blog friends are my friends...period.
And no one who is not a blogger gets it. So I've stopped trying to explain it.
I agree with Amanda! Sometimes I prefer my blog friends over my IRL friends. Shh...don't tell them! I am still amazed by the friendships that I have found through blogging. I really had no idea that this would ever happen when I started blogging.
It doesn't matter HOW you connect, it just matters THAT you connect. Why don't these outsiders get that? Losers.
You're right! It can be tricky explaining "blog friends" to non-bloggers! My husband does it get it all and thinks I'm silly...
That's so funny! I've referrered to a bloggy friend to a non blogger/IRL life friend, and I didn't know what to say. I just said "a friend of mine". LOL
I love the friends I've found on here. I couldn't agree more!
Some of my closest and best friends are bloggers. Some I've met and some I haven't. But they all mean so much to me!
I don't think it's crazy at all. I love the community aspect of blogging and I love meeting new people. The #SummerBlogSocial is such a great way to do that too! :)
I've also really loved meeting new people through blogging. I do feel like I must be slightly socially awkward online, though, because I have yet to forge a bond that's a deep as you describe. Color me a little jealous! ;)
Also? You had me at Jazz hands!
It really is amazing. I used to say "this girl whose blog I read" and now I just say "my friend."
Like I said on my it's blogworthy comment, I don't have a ton of blog friends due mostly to my shyness and lack of effort (my real life friends are all from when I was in middle school). But I have enjoyed the people I have met through blogging and the people whose blogs I read daily. Plus I've gotten great tv/book recomendations and a few free things sent to me in the mail. All pluses.
Well said, though I still have the difficulty explaining the "friends who live in my computer" to my mom, sometimes.
I agree with all of the above comments as well.
The people I've "met" through blogging are some of the best friends I have (is that sad?), and I am so thankful for it.
I also have given up with the "this girl who's blog I read..." - now when someone has the gall to ask why I'm going to Sacramento, I proudly say "to visit a friend!"
I don't know a better cherry popper than Surferwife.
Sorry KLZ.
And give the idea credit to Jessica; she asked me to be her co-host. ;-)
Couldn't agree more!!! So excited for CalTexAwesomeFest2011!!!
I LURVE my blog friends!
I'm so jealous of your upcoming adventure with Shana and Ally--they are the coolest, you'll have a blast together!
I know exactly what you mean. I feel as though lately I've been referring to my blog friends a whole lot more which probably raises some eyebrows. But I think of them (and you!) the same way I do all of my *IRL* friends. These connections have hands-down been the best thing to come from blogging for me, too.
*HUGS*
I love the people that I've met through the blog community! And you bet your bottom dollar once I'm in CA, we'll have to hang out again!
There's a Makers Mark distillery tour being planned without me??!! DAY-UM i am jealous.
I agree, the friends that live in my computer are badass. A lot of them know me better than my IRL friends do.
I met my first serious boyfriend through a group of people I knew mostly online... so I've never really held much of a distinction between 'online' and 'IRL' friends. I love meeting people, whichever way I meet them... blogging is just another way to meet a different set of (lovely) people :)
I remember in the beginning that it was really scary, but after a while you realize everyone is just like you on the other side of those monitors. It's SO much fun to meet blog friends in person, and boy are you doing a lot of it!
